Golden Hills Apiary will be offering 5-frame nucleus colonies of bees in the Spring of 2026. The final cost of all nucs will be $190 (plus queen marking fee if requested). Please read carefully.
These bees have been raised in southeast Iowa. Over-wintered nucleus colonies have young 2025 queens that have successfully overwintered and will likely be available sometime the later half of April 2026 or early May 2026. Spring colonies will have new 2026 queens and will likely be available in the later half of May 2026. These days may move ahead or be pushed back depending on spring weather and the ability of colonies to “brood up” in the spring. We will be in contact with our customers that have made deposits in order to provide you with as much advanced notice of the final dates as possible given the circumstances.
You may indicate your preference of the two types of nucs by selecting the type you would prefer to receive. There is no guarantee that we will have enough overwintered nucs. Orders will receive priority according to the date deposits were placed. In the event that we run short, we will offer a spring nuc as an alternative.
There is an additional $5 fee for a marked queen which will be collected at the time of making a deposit. We will make every effort to assure that your request for a marked queen is fulfilled, but it is not guaranteed. You will make your choice when placing your deposit order and the option is available with either overwintered or spring nucs.
We will require a $100 deposit to reserve a nucleus colony. DEPOSITS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. You are committed to following through with the purchase on making a deposit. Only in the case we cannot fulfill your order will a deposit (and marking fee, if any) be refunded. We will make every effort to fulfill every order for which a deposit is made, but mother nature can sometimes frustrate those efforts.
The balance of $90 will be due at or prior to pickup. Please be sure to provide an accurate email and phone number so that we may communicate with you regarding final pickup times and dates. Pickup will be in Keota or Riverside, Iowa.
